Back to Routine in Autumn: How to Avoid the Energy Slump

September arrives, and with it the end of vacation, the return to fixed schedules, and that feeling that your body is resisting leaving “summer mode.” It’s not just in your head: there are physiological reasons behind the tiredness many people feel at this time of year.
Why is autumn so hard?
As autumn arrives, the days get shorter and we receive less sunlight, which directly affects our biological clock. This can alter the production of melatonin and cortisol, the hormones that regulate sleep and energy levels throughout the day. Add the abrupt change of routine, from free afternoons at the beach to office workdays, and the result is the classic September and October slump.
5 keys to getting your energy back without suffering the change
- Respect your sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time, even on weekends, helps your body readjust its circadian rhythm faster. Avoid screens for at least 30 minutes before bed.
- Get natural light in the morning. Going for a walk, or simply being exposed to daylight during the first 30-60 minutes after waking up, helps “reset” your internal clock and feel more awake during the day.
- Eat with the seasons. Autumn brings foods rich in key nutrients: pumpkin, sweet potato, pomegranate, nuts… Prioritizing fresh, seasonal foods over quick snacking makes a real difference to your sustained energy levels.
- Stay physically active, even at lower intensity. You don’t need to keep up your summer pace; moving regularly is enough. Moderate exercise improves sleep quality and reduces accumulated fatigue.
- Don’t underestimate good nutritional support. With the change of routine, we often let our guard down on nutrition just when the body needs it most. A good supplement can help cover those nutritional gaps during the weeks of greatest adjustment, as a support, never a substitute, for good habits.
Returning to routine doesn’t have to be a slump.
Autumn doesn’t have to be synonymous with constant tiredness. With small adjustments to your sleep, light exposure, diet, and movement, your body adapts much faster than we think. Listen to it, give it what it needs, and your energy will come back sooner than you expect.
